Alibaug vs Karjat: Choosing Between the Sea and the Hills
October 24, 2026
Alibaug and Karjat both sit in Raigad district, both are within a weekend's reach of Mumbai and Pune, and they could hardly feel more different. One gives you salt air, long beaches and old sea forts. The other gives you a river, forested hills and waterfalls that come alive in the rains. Choosing between them is less about which is better and more about what kind of two days you want.
The short answer
Choose Alibaug if you want the sea: a beach at sunset, a fort you reach across the water, fresh seafood and the feeling of a coastal retreat. Choose Karjat if you want green hills, a river at the edge of your stay, quieter surroundings and a journey with no ferry in it. If you are travelling with a large group, or choosing mainly by season, read on, because the answer shifts.
Getting there from Mumbai and Pune
Karjat is the simpler journey. It sits on the Mumbai suburban rail line, with Neral the usual station for the riverside stays around it, and by road you should allow around two hours from Mumbai or Pune depending on where you start and how heavy the traffic is. There is no ferry to plan around.
Alibaug is across the water from Mumbai, so you choose a route. The passenger ferry runs from the Gateway of India to Mandwa, the RoRo vehicle ferry runs from Bhaucha Dhakka to Mandwa, and the road route crosses the Atal Setu. The sea crossing is roughly an hour, followed by a road transfer to your stay. By road, allow about an hour and a half in light traffic and up to three hours when the roads are busy. Sailings depend on weather and operator schedules, so check the current status before you build a plan around them. Our guide to the ferry, RoRo and road options from Mumbai to Alibaug goes through each one, and the routes from Pune are covered separately.
The setting: coast or valley
Alibaug is a coastal stay. The draw is the shoreline, from Nagaon to Kihim and Awas, and the sea forts that make a good half day. If you are still deciding between the beaches themselves, this comparison of Nagaon, Kihim and Alibaug beach will help.
Karjat is a valley stay in the Sahyadri foothills. The landscape is hills, the Ulhas river, waterfalls and village roads, with no coastline at all. It is greener, and the pace is set by the river and the hills rather than by the beach, which is exactly what some travellers are after.
What you actually do
In Alibaug the trip tends to be built around beach time and short outings: sunset spots, a visit to Kolaba Fort at low tide, water sports at the beaches that offer them, and a long meal of local seafood. There is a fuller list in our guide to the things to do in Alibaug.
Karjat is more active and more outdoors. Waterfall walks, treks to places such as the Kondana Caves and Peth Fort, riverside walks and village cycling fill the days, and river adventure activities are available in season. These depend on water levels and weather, so confirm with the operator before you go. The things to do in Karjat guide lists the options by season and travel style.
When each place is at its best
Karjat is at its most dramatic in the monsoon, from June to September, when the hills turn green and the waterfalls run. That is also when you need care: stay away from swollen rivers and waterfalls in heavy rain, and keep some flexibility in your plans. The cooler months from October to February are easy and pleasant. The best time to visit Karjat goes month by month.
Alibaug is easiest to enjoy in the cooler months, when beach days and fort visits are comfortable. In the monsoon the sea is rough and swimming in it is generally not advisable, so follow local advice. A monsoon stay in Alibaug is a different trip: rain, quiet and a good villa to spend it in. Choosing a stay
For a weekend that is mostly about staying put, a private pool villa suits both places. In Karjat, Privy Stays has Story by the River, a three bedroom villa that sleeps six guests as standard and up to ten, with a private pool, direct access to the adjacent river and in villa menus for vegetarian and non vegetarian meals. It is about 14.7 km, roughly 25 minutes, from Neral railway station. You can read more about the area on the Karjat destination page.
Alibaug offers a wider choice. Privy Stays looks after private pool villas, boutique hotels and resorts across the area, which you can browse among the villas in Alibaug. If you want help narrowing them down, our guide to the best private pool villas in Alibaug explains what to look for. For bigger parties, see villas in Alibaug for large groups.
Who each place suits
Couples who want a slow, private weekend can be happy in either, so let the scenery decide: sea air and sunsets in Alibaug, a river and green hills in Karjat. Families with young children often find Karjat easier on the journey, while Alibaug rewards families who want beach time and are comfortable with a ferry or a longer drive. Friends travelling in larger groups usually have more choice of villas in Alibaug. Teams planning an offsite can compare both against our guide to corporate offsites near Mumbai.
If neither feels quite right, you may also be weighing the hill station option: our comparison of Alibaug and Lonavala covers that choice, and the full Alibaug travel guide is the place to start for the coast.
Frequently asked questions
Is Karjat or Alibaug closer to Mumbai?
Karjat is the shorter and simpler journey, with no ferry involved. Alibaug is further by road, and many travellers use the ferry or RoRo to Mandwa to shorten the drive.
Which is better in the monsoon, Alibaug or Karjat?
Karjat is known for monsoon greenery and waterfalls, though you need to take care near rivers and falls. Alibaug is quieter in the rains and the sea is rough, so it suits a villa focused stay rather than beach days.
Can I visit both in one weekend?
It is possible, but they lie in different directions from Mumbai, and you would spend much of the weekend on the road. Most travellers are happier choosing one and giving it the full two days.
Which is better for a large group?
Alibaug generally offers more choice of villas for larger parties. Story by the River in Karjat sleeps up to ten guests, so check your group size against the property page before you decide.
