Where to Stay on the Konkan Coast

Alibaug and the coastline south of it are not one destination but half a dozen, and they are genuinely different from each other. A weekend in Mandwa — ferry in from Gateway, lunch by the water, back by Sunday evening — is a different trip from four days in Murud, where the appeal is precisely that nothing much happens.

Choosing the right base matters more than choosing the right house. A beautiful villa in the wrong town means a group that spends the weekend in the car. This page exists to help you pick the town first.

The Destinations We Cover

• Alibaug
  The anchor of the region and the easiest introduction. Long palm-lined beaches, a working town with restaurants and markets, Kolaba Fort walkable at low tide, and the widest choice of stays. If it is your first trip, or you are travelling with a mixed group who want different things from a weekend, Alibaug is the safe answer. Most of our villas sit here or within twenty minutes of it.
• Mandwa
  The arrival point for anyone taking the ferry from Mumbai, and increasingly a destination in its own right. Waterfront dining, a calmer stretch of coast than central Alibaug, and the shortest total travel time from South Mumbai. Good for short weekends where you do not want to lose half a day to the road.
• Nagaon
  The most energetic of the beaches — water sports, beach shacks, parasailing, and a livelier evening crowd. Nagaon suits groups of friends, birthdays and anyone who wants the holiday to have some noise in it. It also has some of our largest properties, which makes it a natural fit for celebrations.
• Kashid
  White sand, clear water and the most photogenic stretch on this coast. Kashid is about an hour south of Alibaug town, which keeps the crowds down midweek and makes it worth the extra drive. Good for couples, longer stays and anyone whose priority is the beach itself rather than what is near it.
• Murud
  Quieter again, and the base for Murud-Janjira — the sea fort that is the single most impressive thing to see in the region. Murud rewards people who are staying more than two nights and are happy to trade convenience for calm.
• Karjat
  Not coastal at all. Karjat sits inland where the Sahyadris begin, and in the monsoon it is arguably the better trip — rivers running full, waterfalls, green that does not exist on the coast. Choose Karjat when you want hills and water rather than sand andsea.

Getting Here from Mumbai

Two routes, and the right one depends on where you are starting.

The ferry from Gateway of India or Bhaucha Dhakka to Mandwa takes under an hour, with a short transfer at the other end. It is by far the fastest option from South Mumbai and it avoids the highway entirely.

Driving via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Pen takes roughly three to four hours depending on traffic and where exactly you are headed. It is the sensible choice if you are coming from the northern or eastern suburbs, travelling with a lot of luggage, or want a car with you for the weekend.

Karjat is a different journey — around two hours by road from Mumbai, or reachable by train on the Central line.

When to Come

The coast is genuinely a year-round destination, but the character changes:

• October to February — the peak. Clear, dry, pleasant days and cool evenings. Book well ahead for weekends and holidays.
• March to May — hot in the afternoon, which makes a private pool less of a luxury and more of a requirement. Quieter, and better value.
• June to September — the monsoon. Dramatic, green and largely empty. The sea is not for swimming, but the landscape is at its best and the rates are at their lowest. Our guide to monsoon in Alibaug covers this in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which destination has the best beach?

Kashid, by most measures — white sand and clean water. Nagaon is livelier, Akshi and Awas are quieter, and Varsoli is the most convenient to Alibaug town.

Can I visit more than one destination in a weekend?

You can, but it usually is not worth it. Mandwa to Kashid is well over an hour each way. Pick one base and take day trips from it.

Is the ferry running all year?

Ferry services are reduced or suspended during the height of the monsoon due to sea conditions. If you are travelling between June and September, confirm before you plan around it.

Which destination is best for a large group?
